If you want a meaningful and thoughtful handmade gift for a special person in your life, this mini book made from a deck of playing cards is just the thing. Inside it contains 52 things you love most about your significant other, family member or friend.
This is a straightforward project but I won’t lie – it’s also pretty time consuming. You’ll need a good couple of hours to complete it, since you need to brainstorm 52 things you love about the person you’re giving this to, then type them up or write them out, cut them out and stick them onto the cards.
This project might only seem suitable for a boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife etc. And yes, I’ve published this tutorial with Valentine’s Day in mind, but it could easily be tailored to a friend or family member. It’s such a nice thing to give someone to put a smile on their face, regardless of your exact relationship with them. I’m sure you can think of 52 things you love about all sorts of important people in your life if you put your mind to it, right?
I’m not going to lie, when I sat down to make my version of this project I felt like I would never think of 52 things I love about my other half! That might sound awful, but I’m just being honest! 52 is a lot… Although it might seem tricky, when you get going it’s actually not so bad. In fact, I ended up with more than 52 things, but it was nice to be able to pick and choose.
If you’re really stuck, here are some ideas to think about:
- Their personality
- Things you like to do together
- Thoughtful things your significant other does
- Favourite memories
- Ways they make you laugh
Although I made my little text boxes on my laptop and printed them out, you don’t have to do this. If you prefer, you can handwrite the things you love about the person. This is a good option if you don’t have a printer or aren’t very confident with computers.
Handmade Gifts: 52 Things I Love About You Mini Book
- A pack of playing cards
- A ruler
- Glue stick or double-sided tape
- A hole punch
- Some ribbon
Brainstorm a list of 52 things you love about the person you’re making this for.
Open up a program on your computer that allows you to draw text boxes. Measure one of your playing cards and draw a text box that’s smaller than your playing card. You can see in my photos that I made my text boxes a fair bit smaller than my cards, but it’s entirely up to you.
Write the first thing you love inside the box and change the font to something you like. I went for a font that looks a little like handwriting. If you haven’t got a suitable font already, check out Da Font for lots of options.
Copy the text box with its contents and paste it so you end up with 52 text boxes.
Work through your list of 52 things and type a different one in each box. It should have saved your font options so you don’t have to change it every time, hopefully saving you some time!
When you’ve filled each text box with a different thing from your list, print the document. Now you need to cut all the boxes out. (Yep, this is pretty time consuming…)
Stick a text box to the back of each playing card.
Punch a hole in the top left of each card. Try to make sure the holes line up as far as possible so the cards line up when you thread the ribbon through.
Thread a piece of ribbon through all the cards and tie it in a bow. Now your mini book of 52 Things I Love About You is finished!
